Join Devon Wildlife Trust and Beaford Arts on a guided walk of Halsdon nature reserve, visiting sites which inspired some of James Ravilious's best known photographs - and showing you the locations of some of the lesser-known images made in and around the same area more than 30 years ago.

Reflect on what the images tell us about our changing world and the rural issues we face today.

Chris Goode - The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley

A tour-de-force performance for anyone who remembers growing up.

Shirley is a teenage dreamer, a loner, and a fan of desperately uncool pop music. He’s also hopelessly in love with a classmate who barely knows he exists. Then, one night, a mysterious figure moves into his ordinary surburban street. Wound Man is an unconventional superhero, who happens to have a vacancy for a teenage side-kick …

Chris Goode combines intimate storytelling and music into a comic-book, super-hero story about growing up and getting braver. One of the big word-of-mouth successes of the Edinburgh Fringe 2011, on a strictly limited national tour which we’re thrilled to be bringing to rural north Devon.

"… possibly my favourite thing full stop. It is very funny in parts, but also lovely, tingle inducing, moving, nostalgic, hopeful, unique and brave. Bloody great.” Daniel Kitson - comedian, actor and playwright

The Beaford Archive includes more than 70,000 photographs of life in rural North Devon, the majority taken by Ravilious during the 1970s and 80s, and is internationally famous for its documentary and aesthetic qualities.

This new exhibition curated by Liz Nicol and Martyn Warren (University of Plymouth) combines their individual perspectives – photographer and agriculturalist respectively – to create a small but perfectly formed selection from Ravilious’s “endless tapestry”. Familiar photographs will share space with others rarely seen before, and will be put in a new context by research exploring present-day responses to Ravilious’ work.

And the best bit? Anyone who wants to be in it – can be in it! In the week leading up to each performance, come and join in village workshops and land yourself a part in the show. To get involved see your local village contact.

"Their inventive style, humour and commitment is impressive. I am a fan." – John Struthers, Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts, Bath

“I laughed out loud and then felt really moved and then laughed out loud again” – audience member

Bring us the troubles of the world and the hope in your hearts.

Uninvited Guests are in town. We call on the people of your village to gather with us, to read the day's newspapers together, to speak and to listen.

We will give voice to the concerns of the hour!
We will question the powers that be!

We will make things better!

This is a town hall meeting, a public protest and the news of your world. In these times of crisis, possessed by the spirits of corporate fat cats, cabinet ministers and media tycoons, we invoke the demons of the day in order to banish them forever.

Each show will draw on the day's news and will be about whatever matters to you; in it we'll be whoever you want us to be. We'll speak the unspeakable. We will make things better.

Beaford Archive: An ‘endless tapestry’ of rural north Devon

The Beaford Archive features on the BBCs TV programme Flog It on Thursday the 9th of February at 3:45pm. Flog It presenter Paul Martin travels to Buckland Abbey in Devon as well as visiting north Devon to find out more about the work of photographer James Ravilious.

The Beaford Archive is a testament to the work of the late artist and photographer James Ravilious, who was commissioned by Beaford Arts in 1972 to document the people and landscape of rural north Devon.

Ravilious's own work for the Beaford Archive covers the 1970s and 1980s. In addition, he copied over 7,000 old photographs of the same area spanning the period 1880-1920. On his death in 1999, both collections became the property of Beaford Arts.

The archive now holds more than seventy thousand images with a selection of seventeen hundred now available to view online. This archive has become what the Royal Photographic Society calls a ‘unique body of work, unparalleled at least in this country for its scale and quality’.

To view the images please click the links below, or to find images of other locations across north Devon, click here.

Beaford Arts launch historic War Horse Gallery

Beaford Arts, England’s longest running rural arts organisation, has launched a new War Horse...

Beaford Arts, England’s longest running rural arts organisation, has launched a new War Horse gallery online. The War Horse Gallery showcases historical photographs taken in the village of Iddesleigh, at the time the novel and much anticipated Steven Spielberg film, War Horse, is based.

War Horse, written by award-winning author Michael Morpurgo, who moved to Iddesleigh, Devon in 1975, tells an epic adventure moving through rural England and Europe during the First World War. The story begins in Iddesleigh with a remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert.

The Beaford Old Archive holds approximately eight thousand images taken in Iddesleigh and the surrounding areas between the years of 1880 and the beginning of the Second World War.

The images were collected by photographer James Ravilious, who was commissioned by Beaford Arts in 1972 to photograph rural life in north Devon. He collected these images from his own subjects by re-photographing them and adding them to his archive.

The images he collected not only reflect the setting of the tale, but also the community where the story was written. Many of the faces seen in the photos hold the haunting realisation that they could be faces of those who were sent to fight in the First World War.

James himself also photographed the area of Iddesleigh and a selection of his images were chosen for the National Theatre's interpretation material in 2007 when War Horse was first adapted into a theatre production which sold-out for two seasons.

Albert’s homeland, the countryside he and Joey fight to defend is the very land where photographer James Ravilious spent much of his time. When Ravilious discovered it in the 1970’s it was still relatively old-fashioned and unspoilt (though major changes were on their way).

He also borrowed and copied a large number of turn-of-the-century photographs of the same subjects. Both collections are in the Beaford Archive, making it probably the most detailed portrait of any rural area in Britain.

Commenting on the Ravilious images chosen for the National Theatre's interpretation material, Michael Morpurgo said ‘Nothing else has chronicled farming life and rural communities and the changing countryside itself as intensely sympathetically as the photographs of James Ravilious.

He continued ‘his constant search to collect and preserve photographs of a past era, has ensured we will always have an understanding and appreciation of English rural life ‘down the deep lanes’ of Devon.’

To view the War Horse Gallery simply click here or you can visit the James Ravilious archive here .

The Wagon Tales’ members offer an impressive list of credits, including Ben Somers, who by night plays bass and sings with The Wagon Tales, and by day plays saxophone for Dizzee Rascal; fiddle player Kate Robinson, who also plays with the English Chamber Orchestra and Tori Amos; banjoist Joe Auckland, who also plays trumpet with Madness and treads the Ronnie Scott's stage with Joe Stilgoe; and amazing mandolin player Joe Hymaf who plays with both Kidnap Alice and Southern Tenant Folk Union – both Beaford favourites.

The Wagon Tales are a favourite act of the booming Magpie’s Nest collective (along with our spring season barnstormers Kidnap Alice) which is building a national reputation for promoting new ideas of traditional and roots music at festivals across the country.

Tom and John Frankland - Frankland and Sons - West Anstey

A new show created by three generations of the same family about the 20th century, parents,...

When Tom Frankland’s aunt died in 2006, he and his father inherited several suitcases containing letters written by his grandparents across 25 years. They reveal the astonishing life and love of a couple living through two world wars and a recession.

Created and performed by Tom and his dad, ‘Frankland and Sons’ maps a true story of fathers and sons on to the events of the 20th century. Both playful and moving, it’s a heartwarming tale of love won, love lost, and wholly inappropriate girlfriends.

“Like all the best true stories, there's a totally sensational plot twist near the end which had us literally gasping with amazement”. Chris Goode, August 2010

Tom’s recent collaborations with Laura Mugridge and The Frequency D'ici both won of Edinburgh Fringe First Awards. John is a retired Cornish drama teacher and multi-award winning director and performer. Frankland and Sons is a new work devised at Forest Fringe, Beaford Arts, and BAC and shows with us as it develops towards a full tour in 2012.

Suitable for adult audiences and young people aged 12+

West Anstey Village Hall: Tickets £10(ad)/£8(ch)/£34(fam) Ticket price includes pre-show Halloween supper.

Contact, Beaford Arts and Take Art present CountryBoy’s Struggle
Written and performed by Maxwell...

Inspired by his own time spent growing up in Bude, Maxwell explores what it’s like living in a rural area and wanting to make music, then moving to the city and finding it’s not what you expect – especially when your heart and soul is on the beaches and with the community you grew up in.

CountryBoy’s Struggle integrates music, poetry, MCing, and physical comedy. This oneman show perfectly captures how it feels to grow up feeling like you just don’t quite fit – a ‘fish out of water’ story with equal measures of street-smart cool, pathos and warm wit.

“Maxwell Golden delivers a searing monologue to music … An excellent piece that does a lot with a little.” **** British Theatre Guide, on Everything Must Go monologue
