Janek Schaefer presents his Local Radio Orchestra - Bideford

Thursday 29 September 2011 11:00am

Bideford Pannier Market like you’ve never heard it before

120 years ago the radio was patented by Edison. Now sound artist, musician and composer Janek Schaefer (creator of the Guinness Book of Records’ “World’s Most Versatile Record Player”) is reaching back to its roots.

Using twelve classic portable radios, Janek invites you to walk around the Pannier Market and tune in, just like wireless used to work back in the day. Meanwhile, Janek will be making a special short-range radio broadcast around the market stalls. Come and see what happens when everyone tunes in together…

This new commission marks the beginning of the year-long Confluence project along the River Torridge, and reminds us how wireless technology has always helped to define a local community. Come along and remember how radio used to be before DAB and online broadcasting.

‘Local Radio Orchestra’ is co-commissioned by Beaford Arts, Oxford Contemporary Music, and South Hill Park, and funded by the PRS Foundation.

11am-6pm, Bideford
