South Molton Shops Exhibition - 5th October – 28th November 2015

Saturday 01 August 2015 4:22pm

An exhibition exploring a collection of previously unseen images from the Beaford Archive - South Molton Museum.

1977, the year of the Queens Silver Jubilee, when a jar of Horlicks cost you 40½p and buying a Trusty Pavemaster bicycle gave you 1,880 Green Shield Stamps.  This was also the year that Beaford Arts commissioned photographer Elizabeth Clifford to document the look and feel of South Molton’s small town shops and the people who worked in them at that time.

This previously unseen collection of photographs was discovered when Beaford Arts relocated its offices to South Molton in the early part of 2014.  In partnership with South Molton Museum and working with South Molton Archive and History Society, Age Concern and members of the wider community, we have been able to uncover the facts behind the images, connecting the scenes of then with the town as it is now.

The photographs will be exhibited at South Molton Museum from 5th October – 28th November, along with additional images and advertisements contributed by South Molton’s Archive and History Society and vintage packaging loaned from Stuart Bennett of Caxtons Antiques, Bampton.

The exhibition will also be part of The National Archives ‘Explore Your Archive’ campaign.
